Pipe Gasket Installation Tool

A large plastic pipe manufacturer contacted us to develop a tool and process for installing gaskets on 18″ and 24″ diameter pipe during the manufacturing process. Once the project was scoped we interviewed the production staff to learn about the working environment, to understand the process workflow and gain employee insights on the ideal tool design. Our goal was to develop a tool to improve the gasket installation process by reducing operating fatigue, improving safety and ergonomics, and streamlining the process.

We leveraged an agile and iterative development process to create and test numerous design iterations in an accelerated time frame. We used our additive manufacturing machine to develop the rapid prototypes.  In fact, we designed the gasket installation tool around additive manufacturing technology so the final 3D printed part is used as a normal installation tool.  We were able to design the tool for maximum structural and impact resistance and leveraged our commercial 3D print head to print the high quality part.

We approached the project as a comprehensive end-to-end initiative providing detailed operation and users manuals for the use of the tool.  The 3D printed tool was adopted for regular gasket installation on the production floor.

Commercial 3D Print Head

Dglass 3D’s commercial customers who produce 3D printers demanded a fused filament print head with maximum reliability and compactness.  Our challenge was to develop a solution to meet these criteria while providing trouble free long term performance in diverse and demanding operating environments.

The aluminum body was designed as a sealed enclosure for the lubricated gear reduction drive train and to serve as a heat sink regulating the temperature generated by the motor during long running and high speed prints.

Dglass 3D’s Pro line of print heads are in service in several commercial 3D printers.

AutoLift 3D Printer Nozzle

A common problem for fused filament additive manufacturing printers is nozzle drag which occurs on machines with more than one print head to produce parts with multiple materials.  There are many potential solutions to address nozzle drag and the most common for industrial machines is to use complex electronic controlled lifting mechanisms to lift inactive nozzles. The problem with the electronic lift systems is they are prone to failure and are overly complex resulting in significant coding and development for the printer manufacturer to provide a reliable solution for their customers.

The challenge presented to us was to develop a simple and reliable mechanical actuated nozzle that would accommodate most polymer filaments for use in fused filament 3D printing to allow for universal integration for 3D printer manufacturers to reduce the development and potential failures from more complex and failure prone electronic systems.

The AutoLift system is patent pending and is currently in use in hundreds of consumer and commercial 3D printing applications.

3D Print Head Reinvented

As Dglass 3D, Inc entered the additive manufacturing market they quickly realized the limitations of then-current 3D printing technology which was  slow, unreliable, and cumbersome. The goal was to develop a highly reliable and compact print head solution to offer greater print speeds for commercial printing applications.

Our solution was the HPX2-MAX, a dual material print head that is 65% lighter and 70% smaller than traditional 2 material print heads.  The primary innovation is the single motor coupled to a gear reduction drive-train which drives one of two available materials for printing.  The unique gear reduction drive and gear change system is patent pending.  The compact design allows for much greater print speed and maximizes the printing size capacity.  The HPX2-MAX is currently in use in hundreds of consumer and commercial 3D printer applications.
